One of my favorite parts of a wedding day is when the bride and groom are toasted by their parents, their Maid of Honor and/or their Best Man. These people know the newlyweds so well and they share lovely insights and stories about the couple that, while maybe most of the guests in attendance already have an inkling of, I certainly haven’t heard before. For me, it’s one of the most revelatory parts of the day, because I get to know more about the bride and groom – as described by those who adore them. This was certainly the case at Brenna + Patrick’s beautiful reception at Chevy Chase Club. Brenna’s mom, Maura, told a lovely story from when her daughter was three years old and set a goal and timeline for herself so that she could stop swimming with floaties by her fourth birthday. And on her fourth birthday, young Brenna was thrilled when she said, “Oh, I’m four!”, and went diving in to the pool sans floaties. Brenna’s sister, Hayley, described a special moment when Brenna calmed and comforted her younger sister so that she wouldn’t be afraid when the two were in trepidatious waters. And finally Patrick’s brother, Michael’s, toast was the perfect finale to the three speeches when he aptly compared Patrick to a puppy and and Brenna to a cat. Patrick is like a puppy in that he is energetic, outgoing, friendly, and remarkably loyal. Brenna is like a cat in that she is calm, thoughtful, sensible, regal, and of course, beautiful. Together, Brenna and Patrick are a perfect match. It was wonderful to be a part of their beautiful (and a wee bit wet :) wedding at Dahlgren Chapel (at Georgetown University, Brenna’s alma mater) and then the raucous celebration at Chevy Chase Club. Congratulations, Brenna + Patrick, and welcome home from your Australian honeymoon!
